The New Orleans Saints will likely be facing a carbon copy of last Sunday’s game versus the Washington Redskins with the Carolina Panthers if certain errors aren’t corrected and one of those could be an ailing secondary.
The presence of Jabari Greer was greatly missed last Sunday and the Redskins took full advantage. Of course the mediocre performance by cornerback Patrick Robinson and the injury to starting nickle cornerback Johnny Patrick didn’t help either.
Greer, while not flashy, is arguably one of the most underrated defensive backs in the NFL and definitely one of the Saints best that they have had in a long time. He doesn’t usually get much press since opposing quarterbacks don’t care to throw his way.
He and Brees are known for giving each other some good natured trash talk before practices and Greer struck first during training camp when he intercepted a pass from him and ran it back for a touchdown.
After being out for the entire preseason following sports hernia surgery, Greer has been able to practice fully recently but was held out for the Redskins game as a precaution. His status for the Panthers game is listed as questionable.
Johnny Patrick’s status on the other hand is pretty clear and with a serious leg injury, won’t play on Sunday. Listed as being behind Patrick on the depth chart is Jerome Murphy who filled in for him after he left Sunday’s game.
Rookie cornerback Corey White could also see some extensive playing time if Greer is unable to play. While White is listed as being behind Greer on the depth chart, Murphy may slide over to the left corner position and White take the nickel spot.
