Coach Marvin Lewis told ESPN.com that he sees the undrafted rookie as a potential starter, and he might get the chance to prove it against the Falcons. He already is off to a strong start this preseason, with a pick off of quarterback Tim Tebow last week.
But Burfict and the rest of the Bengals defense will have to impress against one of the top offenses in the league. Last week the Cincinnati's first team D looked strong, though it was also facing a Jets offense that was installing a new system and missing two of its top three wide receivers.
It will be particularly interesting to see how Bengals' starting cornerbacks Leon Hall and Nate Clements- and possibly rookie Dre Kirkpatrick- do against the Falcons receiving duo of Julio Jones and Roddy White. Jones in particular had 109 yards receiving last week on just six catches. It will be a good test for the corner duo, who will have to face the explosive NFC East offenses in the regular season.
Atlanta, meanwhile, will want to work on its running game after Michael Turner had only 17 yards on five carries. The battle for starting fullback got more interesting after rookie Bradie Ewing tore his ACL last week. He is now out for the season, so the team signed veteran Lousaka Polite to compete with Mike Cox.
The Falcons' starting defense performed well against the Ravens last week, but the backup defenders allowed Curtis Painter of all people to throw three touchdown passes. The reserve cornerbacks in particular need to prove themselves worthy of a roster spot and/or playing time.
